Audio Hijack gives you a better control over your Mac's audio. It is designed primarily for audio recording, but it can be used for other purposes as well, like increasing the maximum volume or enhancing the system's audio quality. The application places numerous possibilities before you and it makes everything very easy to prepare and execute.

The application's functionality is based around recording sessions, which can be saved separately. All sessions and recordings are displayed on different tabs, on a clean and simple user interface, on which you can also schedule individual sessions, if you wish to automate certain recordings. When creating a new session, you can either start with a blank project or choose one of the available templates, for recording an application, an audio CD, a podcast and from many other sources.

Setting up a recording session involves inserting and connecting a series of blocks. Each block represents a particular operation like recording, balancing, denoising and so on. Also, each block can be reconfigured, to store the recording in a specific format, on a certain path, to target an application of your choice and more.

All blocks can be connected freely, without any restrictions, according to how you wish to process the sound. For example, you can link an application's block directly to a recording block, but you can also link it to an equalizer block first and then to the recorder. Furthermore, you may send the application's sound or other sounds to another output device at the same time if you want to.

When your setup is complete, you only need to click a large red button, in the lower left corner of the interface, to execute your plan. Alternatively, you can set up a scheduler, to let the application record automatically, on certain days, at specific hours.

Pros

The application gives you complete freedom, to record from any source, in any way you want. Preparing a recording session can be done without any difficulties. The application is lightweight and you can have it up and running in no time.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention. With Audio Hijack, recording an application's audio output is just a fraction of what you can do.
